Ultimate Guide: IPL vs Microneedling for Better Skin

IPL vs microneedling for redness, pigmentation and uneven skin tone

If you are deciding between IPL vs microneedling, the right answer may not be one or the other. Sometimes, the best treatment plan is about choosing the right order.

Recently, a patient booked an appointment at La Peau Skin Lab expecting to have microneedling. Her main concerns included uneven pigmentation, an uneven skin tone and visible redness associated with rosacea.

After assessing her skin, one of our medical aestheticians recommended a different plan: begin with a Lumecca IPL treatment, allow the skin time to recover, and then follow with SkinPen microneedling a few weeks later.

Why the change?

Because although IPL and microneedling can complement each other beautifully, they target very different concerns.

IPL vs Microneedling: What Is the Difference?

Both treatments can improve the overall appearance of the skin, but they work in different ways.

Lumecca IPL: Targeting Pigmentation and Redness

Lumecca IPL uses intense pulsed light to target specific colours within the skin.

It is commonly used to improve the appearance of:

      • Brown spots and sun-related pigmentation

      • Uneven skin tone

      • Visible redness

      • Broken capillaries

      • Some visible signs associated with rosacea

      • Post-summer sun damage

The light energy is absorbed by pigment and visible blood vessels in the skin. Over time, treated pigmentation may darken temporarily before gradually fading.

For someone whose most noticeable concerns are redness and pigmentation, IPL can often be a logical first step.

It is important to note that IPL does not cure rosacea. However, in appropriate candidates, it may help reduce the appearance of persistent redness and visible vessels.

SkinPen Microneedling: Targeting Texture and Scarring

    Microneedling works very differently.

SkinPen creates controlled microchannels in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing response and supports collagen and elastin production.

Microneedling may be recommended for concerns such as:

        • Uneven skin texture

        • Acne scarring

        • Fine lines

        • Enlarged-looking pores

        • Certain types of scarring

        • Overall skin quality

Rather than specifically targeting brown or red pigment, microneedling is particularly useful when texture and collagen remodeling are the priorities.

Why Did We Recommend IPL First?

In this patient’s case, the visible pigmentation, uneven tone and rosacea-related redness were more prominent concerns than texture alone.

Starting with IPL allowed us to address those colour-related concerns first.

Microneedling can then be introduced once the skin has recovered to focus more specifically on texture, collagen production and overall skin quality.

      There is another important consideration.

When skin is actively irritated, inflamed or experiencing a rosacea flare, microneedling may not always be the best treatment to perform immediately. Creating controlled micro-injury in already reactive skin can sometimes increase temporary redness or irritation.

That is why an in-person assessment matters.

What someone books online may not necessarily be the treatment their skin needs most that day.

Why IPL Followed by Microneedling Can Be Such a Great Combination

Think of the two treatments as addressing different layers of the overall concern.

      First: Lumecca IPL
Targets the visible colour concerns, including brown pigmentation and redness.

      Then: SkinPen microneedling
Targets texture, scarring, fine lines and collagen remodeling.

Used thoughtfully, the combination can create a more comprehensive treatment plan than relying on either treatment alone.

The timing between treatments is also important. We generally want the skin to fully settle after IPL before introducing microneedling. The appropriate interval varies depending on your skin, the treatment settings and how you heal.

For many patients, that means waiting several weeks between treatments.

Why Fall Is an Ideal Time to Start

Fall is one of our favourite times to begin a more intentional skin treatment plan.

After summer, many people notice concerns such as:

          • New brown spots

          • More visible pigmentation

          • Redness

          • Uneven tone

          • Dryness

          • Rougher texture

At the same time, UV exposure often begins to decrease as we move into the cooler months.

Sun protection remains essential after both IPL and microneedling, but fall can make it easier to plan treatments that require extra attention to UV exposure.

It is also the perfect time to start thinking ahead.

What You Do Now Can Prepare Your Skin for the Holiday Season

If you want your skin looking refreshed for holiday parties, photos and events, November or December is not necessarily the time to begin.

Skin treatments work on a timeline. IPL-treated pigmentation needs time to respond and fade. Microneedling also works gradually as the skin’s natural repair process continues.

Starting your treatment plan in October or early November gives your skin time to recover between appointments and allows improvements to develop before the holiday season. Rather than trying to fit in an aggressive treatment days before an event, we can build a plan weeks in advance.

IPL first > Recovery > Microneedling next. Then give your skin time to do what it does naturally.

Not Sure Whether You Need IPL or Microneedling?

You do not need to know which treatment to book before you come in.

In fact, this recent patient is a perfect example of why consultation is such an important part of medical aesthetics.

        She booked microneedling.

After looking at her skin and discussing her concerns, we determined that IPL was the better place to start.

The goal is not to perform the treatment you think you need. It is to choose the treatment that makes the most sense for your skin.

At La Peau Skin Lab in North Vancouver, our medical aestheticians can assess concerns including pigmentation, redness, texture, scarring and signs of sun exposure. From there, we can create a personalized treatment sequence.
